Doctoral (PhD) Studies in Law

Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Gdańsk invites you to participate in Doctoral (PhD) Studies in Law in English. It is an extra-mural course lasting 4 years (8 semesters).  Its objective is to prepare the participants for preparation and defence of the doctoral dissertation. The program, which consists of 428 hours, includes lectures, workshops, specialized seminars and consultations with the research supervisor concerning the following fields of law:

  • public international law,
  • criminal law,
  • civil law,
  • EU law,
  • human rights law,
  • high technology law,
  • intellectual property law,
  • commercial law,
  • labour law,
  • environmental law,
  • administrative law,
  • constitutional law,
  • public economic law,
  • maritime law,
  • history of law and legal doctrines,
  • theory and philosophy of law.

Doctoral seminars are conducted by experienced experts, professors of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Gdańsk, as well as foreign, internationally renowned professors collaborating with the Faculty, inter alia from Chicago-Kent College of Law.

After getting all required credits and passing examinations, after presentation of the doctoral dissertation and the successful result of the public defence the graduate of third-cycle course is granted the title of Doctor of Juridical Science.

Half of the classes take place as distance learning (e-learning), while the remaining classes are held in the building of Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Gdańsk, located in the very centre of one of  the most modern European campuses. The Main Library of the University of Gdańsk,  regarded as the academic information centre, student hostels, student clubs, the football pitch, tennis courts and many others are situated nearby.

The Faculty has one lecture theatre with 400 seats and three auditoria with 300, 200 and 150 seats respectively. There are also 37 up-to-date lecture halls (with 30 and 60 seats), two courtrooms equipped as the real ones, where simulations of real court trials are held, and the computer laboratory, the museum of criminalistics, the ballistic laboratory, the fitness centre, the restaurant, the coffee house, the newsagents’, the Faculty library, the bookshop and the self-study room. The lecture theatre, the auditoria and the lecture halls are all equipped with modern multimedia.

The building of Faculty of Law and Administration is fully adapted for the disabled. Students can easily reach all lecture halls, auditoria, as well as the rest and refreshment rooms and service outlets. The lecture theatre is equipped with special writing tables for students with motor disability (using wheelchairs). The lifts are adapted for transport of wheelchairs to the highest floors of the building. Numerous facilities help students with auditory impairment (special headphones) and visual impairment (marking in Braille’s system, voice messages in lifts). In 2006 Mayor of Gdańsk awarded our Faculty with the title: ‘Friendly Place for the Disabled’.
