Introduction

The School of American Law established in Gdańsk is operated in partnership by the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Gdańsk. The School of American Law began to operate in academic year 2003/2004 as a result of cooperation of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk with the Chicago-Kent College of Law, IIT.

The School of American Law was the first initiative of this type in the northern part of Poland and among the first in the country. The School organizes a two-semester course on American law. The program of the School is designed for Polish students, as well as graduates and professionals who are interested in American regulations, legal culture and practice, ethics etc. The course provides students with an introduction to the American legal and judicial system as well as the fundamental principles of American law and comparative elements of International and EU Law. The program of the School comprises of introductory courses on such subjects as American Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Business Law and Competition Law. The detailed curriculum of the course varies in given academic year. Students who successfully complete a program of the School of American Law receive certificate issued jointly by the Chicago-Kent College of Law, IIT and the University of Gdańsk - the Faculty of Law and Administration.

Faculty of the School of American Law

The faculty of the School of American Law consists of Chicago-Kent professors who travel to Gdańsk to teach intensive courses in selected subjects, some courses are also taught by prominent American and Polish lawyers and academics from other universities.

Gdańsk / Chicago LL.M. Program

The Chicago-Kent and the University of Gdańsk arranged a unique program that enables the graduates of the School of American Law in Gdańsk to subsequently earn LLM degree in International and Comparative Law from the Chicago-Kent College of Law after only one semester in Chicago, as the classes of the School are credited as a first semester of LL.M. studies at Chicago-Kent.

The LLM degree in International and Comparative Law at the Chicago-Kent College of Law is a program for foreign lawyers whci provides an excellent opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the American Legal System and and international legal issues.. The program offers flexibility in the choice of law courses as well as the opportunity to conduct independent research.

Students acquire important skills that will aid them in their pursuit of a legal career. Students enrolled in the program attend courses and seminars along with Chicago-Kent J.D. students.

The students of the School of American Law in Gdańsk in order to participate in Chicago/Gdańsk LL.M. Program have to:

·         complete the classes at the School of American Law in Gdańsk and pass exams conducted by the lecturers of the School,

·         register for Chicago-Kent LL.M. Programs, while studying at the School of American Law,

·         graduate law studies in Poland,

·         pay one-semester tuition and fulfill other condition according to regulations of LL.M. studies at the Chicago-Kent.

Student Exchange Program

In 2007, the University of Gdańsk and the Chicago-Kent College of Law signed a cooperation agreement that enables students of both institutions to participate in a one-semester exchange program. Exchange students will be permitted to enroll in courses at the host institution for which they are qualified, subject to the same requirements and conditions as students from the host institution. Exchange students will be required to sit for examinations and be assessed and graded in the same manner as students in the host institution, and will acquire credits in accordance with the regulations of the host institution. Academic credit earned at the host institution will be transferable to the home institution in accordance with procedures and criteria set by the home institution.

Academic and scientific cooperation

The cooperation agreement signed by the University of Gdańsk and the Chicago-Kent College of Law created the basis for intensive academic and scientific cooperation enabling exchange of faculty as well as joint research  and publications and other projects such as conferences, scientific sessions, symposia and seminars.

In 2005 and 2007 the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk and the Chicago-Kent College of Law organized in Gdansk the International Conference on High Technology Law.

The Chicago-Kent College of Law is the second oldest law school in Illinois. Chicago-Kent College of Law is recognized for the scholarly excellence of its faculty and distinguished by its curricular innovation. Chicago-Kent College of Law merged in 1969 with Illinois Institute of Technology (http://www.iit.edu/). As part of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent is one of the few law schools affiliated with a technological university and has cutting edge expertise in areas such as intellectual property law, information technology law and e-commerce law and is the leading law school in applying computer technology to enhance the study of law and in addressing the global implications of new developments in science and technology.

Chicago-Kent was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1936 and became a member of the Association of American Law Schools in 1951. In 1988 Chicago-Kent was elected unanimously to the Order of the Coif law school honor society.
