SEA-EU, the European University of the SEAS
SEA-EU, the European University of the SEAS
The University of Gdańsk was among 17 consortia of European universities selected in the European Commission competition "European Universities".
The European University of the Seas SEA-EU consortium consists of the following partners:
University of Cádiz (Spain). Coordinator
University of Split (Croatia)
Université de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest (France)
Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel (Germany)
University of Naples Parthenope (Italy)
University of Malta (Malta)
NORD University (Norway)
University of Gdańsk (Poland)
University of Algarve (Portugal)
As part of this project, our University will implement a completely new model of education and academic exchange with partner universities. In practice, this means e.g. intensifying the exchange of academic staff and students, and, in the future, also a joint diploma from all these universities.
Maritime studies and research
The University of Gdańsk (UG) also plays a leading role in the field of oceanography publications in Poland (21.5% of all Polish publications in this area).
The Department of Maritime Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration is a major opinion-forming centre in Poland, influencing the national maritime economy. The marine focus of the UG is not only evident in scientific achievements. The Faculty of Biology has a rich marine collection. It operates the Museum of Amber Inclusions and owns a skeleton of the second-largest animal on Earth – the common fin whale (finback whale). The UG also offers fields of study, majors, and research related to the sea, especially the Baltic coast, e.g.: oceanography, biology, geography, research on the protection of the marine environment, research on maritime law, the system of Pomeranian cities, maritime forensics, maritime transport and trade, the marine problems of Pomerania, the folklore of north-east Poland and Baltic and Slavic mythology, problems of the Baltic Sea region, the history of Gdańsk and Pomerania.
International Baltic cooperation
The UG researchers are also involved in various international projects, the common denominator of which is the Baltic Sea. This includes participation in Baltic cooperation through the implementation of international scientific projects, e.g. under the framework of Horizon 2020 (Assemble Plus project) and Interreg South Baltic (Seaplanspace project – a unique European cooperation network for sustainable maritime management). The UG initiated and coordinates the activities of the National Centre for Baltic Research Consortium consisting of universities from Pomerania and research institutes carrying out research and development projects and services related to the maritime economy. The UG also has an influence on shaping the European Commission's scientific policy on marine and environmental issues through the active participation of UG staff in appointed advisory bodies.
The marine focus of the UG is also visible in the operation of scientific research stations of international renown, such as the Krzysztof Skóra Marine Station of the Institute of Oceanography in Hel, the Bird Migration Research Station, and the Biological Station in Sobieszewo. No other university in Poland has its own research vessel. The UG is the owner of the most modern ship in Poland - "R/V Oceanograf" - designed for conducting interdisciplinary research of the environment and nature of the Baltic Sea and conducting teaching classes for students.
