Participation of Krystyna Warylewska-Kamuś, MA in Horizon 2020 - RECONNECT project
Within the Horizon 2020 project Reconnect - "Reconciling Europe with its Citizens through Democracy and Rule of Law" (RECONNECT) MA Krystyna Warylewska-Kamuś took an active part in the Principles of Democracy Working Group 5 (WP5).
The main goal of WP5 is to explain and compare the fundamental principles that underlie the separation of powers and legitimise democratic governance in the EU and its member states. The group examines how these principles have been linked to the process of European integration, as well as the different levels of resilience these principles exhibit in the face of alternative discourses on democracy.
The core objectives of WP5 include:
To map the key democratic principles that characterize the European Union and the political systems of its member states and their differences, including their institutional forms;
To analyse alternative (populist) discourses on democracy, particularly in relation to its key elements such as sovereignty, legitimacy and power in order to identify the conditions under which they are effective.
To explore the interrelationships and interactions between the contestation of democratic principles in EU member states and the crisis of EU governance.
As part of her work in WP5, Krystyna Warylewska- Kamuś, MA, attended the Working Group meeting in Amsterdam and participated in a public event organized by the group entitled: Populism and Democracy: Friends or Foes?
