“Philosophy of Law” by prof. J. Zajadło and prof. K. Zeidler (eds.)
We are delighted to announce the publication of “Philosophy of Law”, edited by prof. Jerzy Zajadło and prof. Kamil Zeidler (Gdańsk-Warszawa: Gdańsk University Press, Wolters Kluwer 2016).
An innovative idea underlies this handbook – teaching an aspect of law through questions and answers. It is based on a philosophical approach to the study of law. We have proceeded from a position that the subject of philosophy of law may be dealt with in five sections. These are: (I) methodology, (II) people, (III) approaches, (IV) concepts, and (V) hard cases). The contents of our book reflects this division into parts.
At the outset, however, we must mention some reservations. First, this handbook considers problems of contemporary philosophy of law, but it is by no means a handbook of the history of philosophy of law. Second, this handbook had a module-based organization. In the future, it will be possible to change these modules as required. Thus, it is an open-ended offering, which will certainly – and this was part of the project from start – be subject for further changes, supplements, and modifications in subsequent editions.
This is also the first book in a “Law: The Basic Concepts” series that has been developed to meet the needs of English-speaking students of law, administration and business. In it academic staff of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Gdańsk present fundamental concepts connected with three central perspectives on legal studies: the dogmatic, the historical, and the theoretical-philosophical. The editors of the series hope that the texts in the series will be an inspiration to further and deeper study of various aspects of the law.
