Scientific development and research of the Department
on the 50th Anniversary of the Faculty of Law and Administration (1970-2020)
DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCIAL LAW – HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Commercial Law and Private International Law has been established in 1999 as a result of conversion of the Department of Trading and Private International Law. The issues related to trading in command and control systems were vested with the Research Centre for Social Collective Trading which was a part of Institute of Civil Law and Labour Law. Due to recent organizational changes at the University, the Division of Private International Law has been established on 1 January 2020 as a part of Department of Civil Law. The Department of Commercial Law and Private International Law changed its name into: The Department of Commercial Law.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Department of Commercial Law investigates modern tendencies in commercial law focusing on commercial companies and commercial contracts. The research profile of the Departments has been developed by Prof. Kazimierz Kruczalak, who led the Department. After the death of Prof. Kazimierz Kruczalak, the Department was led by Krzysztof Trzciński, PhD and Assoc. Prof. Jerzy Ciszewski. Currently, the Head of the Department is Assoc. Prof. Joanna Kruczalak-Jankowska.
The Department analyses also the field of restructuring and insolvency law.
The research activities of the Department are based on three research groups:

Led by Assoc. Prof. Bartłomiej Gliniecki, the Company Law Research Group examines and analyses various companies and corporate structures – including problems related to commercial companies under the Polish law as well as development tendencies – but also extends its research to all kinds of related issues as corporate governance or corporate finance.

Led by Assoc. Prof. Joanna Kruczalak-Jankowska, the Bankruptcy and Restructuring Research Group examines and analyses various issues related to insolvency.

Led by Assoc. Prof. Małgorzata Balwicka – Szczyrba, the Real Estate Transactions Research Grup focuses on trading and management of the real property.
INTERNATIONAL GRANTS AND PROJECTS
In last years the Department of Commercial Law conducted the following foreign and international grants and projects
1.1. Assoc. Prof. Joanna Kruczalak-Jankowska and Monika Maśnicka, MA: “The ACURIA Project – ‘Assessing Courts' Undertaking of Restructuring and Insolvency Actions: best practices, blockages and ways of improvement’. The ACURIA Project was a research project carried by four European countries i.e. Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal. The Project has been financed from the European Union Justice Programme (2014-2020) on the basis of the grant agreement No. 723202 dated 30 November 2016 (invitation to submit offers No. JUST-2015-JCOO-AG/JUST-2015-JCOO-AG-1).
1.2. Members of the Department participate actively in research carried by Societas - Central and Eastern European Company Law Research Network.
INTERNATIONAL TEACHING ACTIVITIES
Members of the Department has undertaken the following teaching activities:
1.3. Robert Obrzud, MA lectures in the School of German Law organised by the Faulty of Law and Administration in cooperation with Institut für Ostrecht der Universität zu Köln (Germany)
1.4. Kaja Zaleska-Korziuk, PhD and Maciej Zejda, MA - coached Faculty students participating in annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.
1.5. Assoc. Prof. Małgorzata Balwicka-Szczyrba carried the project „Fundamentals of University Teaching and Tutoring Programme” organised by University of Groningen, (The Netherlands).
