About Professor Ren Yatsunami

Guest Lectures by Professor Ren Yatsunami (Kyushu University, Japan)Professor Ren Yatsunami is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, Kyushu University, specializing in Private International Law and International Business Law. He earned his LL.B., LL.M., and LL.D. degrees from Kyushu University. Before joining Kyushu University in 2017, he served as an Associate Professor at Kagawa University and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Tokyo, supported by a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Professor Yatsunami's research encompasses Private International Law, International Civil Litigation, International Business Law, and International Cultural Heritage Law. He actively participates in UNESCO meetings concerning the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.

His scholarly contributions include co-editing the book Regulatory Hybridization in the Transnational Sphere (Martinus Nijhoff, 2013) and authoring chapters such as "Historical Perspective on Special Economic Zones in Japan" in Special Economic Zones: Experiments in Local Deregulation (Mohr Siebeck, 2016). In recognition of his academic achievements, he received the JSPS Ikushi Prize and the Kyushu University Award for Academic Research Activities in 2012.

Professor Yatsunami's current research projects focus on reconceptualizing "authenticity" for the protection of world cultural heritage and exploring the role of Private International Law in constructing trustworthy global value chains. He also contributes to the Advanced Asian Archaeology Research Center (QA3RC) and teaches courses related to the implementation and operation of the Hague Conventions.

His first lecture will focus on Japanese legal culture from both historical and contemporary perspectives, while the second lecture will examine the Japanese approach to cultural heritage protection, with particular attention to legal frameworks, conservation approaches, and the role of international law.
