Professor Steven Oberman (University of Tennessee College of Law, USA) Begins His Teaching Visit in Gdańsk

In the Spring semester of the academic year 2025/2026, the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk is hosting a visiting lecturer from the United States, Professor Steven Oberman - an experienced trial lawyer and academic teacher. Professor Oberman has already arrived in Gdańsk and will be teaching at our Faculty in the coming weeks.

Professor Steven Oberman is a trial lawyer based in Knoxville, Tennessee, and has been in legal practice since 1980. His work has included extensive criminal defence practice, with a particular focus on cases involving driving under the influence, as well as a broad range of other matters - from minor offences to the most serious criminal cases - alongside selected civil law matters. Since 1993, he has also served as an adjunct (part-time) professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law. Professor Oberman has further international teaching experience gained through academic visits at European law faculties, including in Riga, Budapest, Ljubljana, and Madrid.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is one of the oldest higher-education institutions in the United States: it was founded in 1794 as Blount College. It is also the largest university in the state of Tennessee. The university has a broad teaching mission. An important part of the University of Tennessee’s profile is also its research capacity - the university co-manages one of the largest United States government laboratories, which runs research programmes including the area of national security.

During his stay, Professor Oberman will teach on several degree programmes offered at our Faculty, as well as within international exchange programmes. At the same time, we would like to invite all members of our academic community—students and staff across different programmes and fields of study - to attend his open lectures, which will be announced shortly.

This visit is another step in the Faculty’s cooperation - developed over nearly two years - with an international foundation that supports visits of American legal professionals, both scholars and practitioners, to European universities. This semester is particularly significant, as it is the first visit of this length within the cooperation. We are pleased to welcome Professor Oberman for an extended stay and we view it as a reflection of the very positive feedback from previous visits by our guests from the United States, including Prosecutor Patrick J. McKinley (California) and Attorney Thomas A. Dickson (North Dakota).

According to the information shared by Professor Oberman, his teaching at the University of Gdańsk will include courses on American Criminal Law and American Trial Advocacy, combining an academic perspective with decades of professional experience.

Detailed information about the schedule of Professor Steven Oberman’s classes and open lectures will be published soon through our official communication channels.
