About the Lecture:
This lecture offers a practitioner's perspective on US Federal Criminal Procedure, bridging the gap between theoretical legal education and courtroom reality. Drawing on over four decades of trial experience and more than 100 jury trials across North Dakota, Attorney Dickson will explore the practical application of federal criminal procedure in real-world cases. The session will address key aspects of criminal defense practice, trial advocacy, and the intersection of federal and state criminal justice systems. Students will gain comparative insights into the American criminal justice framework, procedural safeguards, and the role of defense counsel in protecting constitutional rights. This lecture provides an invaluable opportunity for comparative legal analysis and understanding how federal criminal procedure operates in practice within the American legal system.
About the Lecturer:
Thomas A. Dickson is a trial attorney from Bismarck, North Dakota, USA. Tom grew up on a family farm where he learned the importance of a hard work ethic and helping his neighbors. He graduated from the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies in 1976 and then attended Southern Methodist University School of Law, where he graduated in 1981. He is also a 2012 graduate of the Trial Lawyer's College in Dubois, Wyoming. Tom began practicing law in 1981 and has tried over 100 criminal and civil cases to jury verdict in courts throughout North Dakota. He is a strong advocate for those who have been injured or are accused of a crime. Tom has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 1992. He has received various awards over the years for his work in the legal profession, including the Light of Justice Award in 2017 and the Distinguished Criminal Justice Act Panel Attorney Award in 2025. Tom is also a lecturer and has been published in various local and national legal magazines.
